Yay! The development of some photographs has taken place! These were taken during winter break where two of my best friends came back to The Burque to visit ME and their families too...

Anyways, we played airsoft with Alysha, Kevin and Stephen. Oh and Andrew came later too.

My True Colors

After a whole semester of nothing but black and white film developing I have finally gone back to shooting in color. So far, the place I love shooting in color is back home in Zuni because of the sunlight and endless blue skies. I always seem to go back to my grandma's/uncle's property because they have acquired a lot of....stuff.

My uncle is quite the avid hunter. He has 3 trucks. Which means he must hunt a lot.

Black and White Film Photography Final

'Sup ya'll. Wow. I've finally got the time to upload my final project for my black and white film class. My final was on people shopping at the mall on black friday and how everyone's attention is directed on one or a few things. This project was a challenge because lighting always various indoors and for most of the shots I shot I chest level so that no one would know that I was photographing. These actual images were 3x3inches and were matted to look like a security feed.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the images in person or via email or the "ask" box.

I was recently told that my parents were never able to get a photo of me and Santa because I would cry every time I saw him.

It's portraiture time. This time around, I got to use not just 400 iso but also 3200 and 100 iso. It was a great way to see how each iso changes my built in light meter so yea. 3200 is great for indoor stuff and 100 for outdoorsies as far as I figured out. For my portraits, I mainly shot strangers accept for the well accustomed person in a couple of the photos below.

Note: all these images are the scans of the actual photo. No other editing has taken place outside of the darkroom.

Before this, two girls hid their faces with their arms and I was like, "Yea...why would I take a picture of you two?"

On our way to Scottsdale, Ariz., for a mountain bike race and saw this guy at the truck stop. You can see our van with the ten bikes and one-less tire in the background.

On this day it rained. Not much words were exchanged except, "You wanna go to Olympia?" I said. "Sure," said he.

Not my cup of coffee. Me and coffee broke up.

Color In Black & White

Holas ya'll! So I finally get to develop and print my own film. No more dropping them off at the drugstore. For the first Black & White film class, we had to mimic or react to famous photographers. Being a bigger fan of color than b&w, I chose David Levinthal and Gregory Crewdson. Above and below are my negatives.

Levinthal uses toys and intricate mini-sets and uses a large-scale polaroid camera to depict toys in action. It's as if his images are frame stills of a movie!

In his legit photography debut, Levinthal recreated World War II.

Crewdson throws down so much dough for just ONE shot. He uses actors, dramatic lighting and insane set buildings to also create a scene that always makes you wonder what happened before and after he took the shot.

Hello fine World Wide Web users and abusers! For the past four summers I've been wanting to go fishing but haven't since my last excursion to the Minnesota Boundary Waters area which was the summer after my junior year of high school. A lot has changed with me and the fam since and we are trying to hang out more often. So, a few weeks ago I proposed a fishing trip and it was a go. At first it was just gonna me and the parentals but my mum backed out and so we invited my half of my brown family! The Ramiros (Ramiro Sr. and Ramiro Jr.) came with my dad and I to Bluewater N.M. for a day of fishing.

We started to fish at a dam and on top of it was this house!

The inside reminded me of a chapel.

What was really sweet about the trip was that Sr. was able to rent a pair of canoes from THE BASE.

Sadly we didn't catch anything but I still had a great time.

I finally got around to developing a roll-o-film but I'm still convinced that I misplaced one whole roll-o-used film. I can't find it? Summer work is over and with that comes no job and the upcoming school year. I'm ready to get back into the swing of working on photo projects and learning more about journalism. These "few" images are from mid-July all the way up to yesterday!

No pictures of Vegas because what stays in Vegas... Stays in Vegas. BUT! Here is the kick ass Hoover Damn and it's massive concrete bridge. The bridge is amazing.

Doug and I rode on a mountain bike trail called The Dragon's Back. Definitely one of my favorite trails except the Dragon's Belly was all mud. progress.

Ricky is leaving for FLORENCE, ITALIA this Tuesday for industrial architecture school! We were sailing on a river and ahead I saw a drop off. The boat coasted to a halt just feet before the edge of a terrifying waterfall that seemed to fall into an enormous crater. I wondered if we were going to survive the ride down when Chris strapped on a backpack, walked to the back of the boat, ran and jumped of the boat and into the crater. In about 5 seconds, I saw that he released his parachute and was gliding his way across the crater. At the edge of the boat, I strap on my pack and watch Chris as I see a gust of wind sweep him up into a whirling upward spiral. We see him going higher and higher and there's nothing we can do. Eventually he passed our atmosphere floating into outer space. I decided to ditch the sail boat and just climb my way down. A random dream of mine for you.

The following images are accidental double exposures. The first time(s) around are of the kids at work doing chalk art, bubbles and of me and my friends airsofting. The double exposure part is of my family butchering two sheep for the summer solstice festivities. I was really shocked and actually amazed at how cool these turned out to be. I assure you that these images mean nothing really and are not meant to have subliminal messages about kids and dead sheep. I PROMISE! These are simply a form of art. Perhaps you can put your own subliminal meaning to these images if you want, just add 'em in the comments part at the bottom of this post. You can be anonymous.

The Kids Are Alright*

My summer J-O-B session is in full swing and so far it's pretty good. Bubbles, chalk art (post up soon), ART!!!!! and the zoooooo! Above, Jessica Boss got the roller coast HANDS IN THE AYER while on our way to the zoo.

It took four straws. AMAZING.

This kid was gettin' bubbles on our clothes and when we told him to stop he said, "So! I'll go Mexican on you!" This kid is obviously not of any Mexican OR Spanish descent.

My favorite piece of art so far was this girl's rock. She painted it with green swirls and put eyes on it.

On our way to the zoo. I caught "Jail Bait" on his mobile.

While back home in Zuni for a weekend, me and my nieces and a nephew took my pup for a walk up the hill. Up the hill is a cemetery and it's the first time that I'm walking the hill because the road up is the hill where I have to go on almost all of my runs. Anyways, I noticed for the first time that there were different headstones and ornaments that decorated each gravesite.

We Become The Sasquatch

This past Memorial Day weekend, Linley and I embarked on our voyage to S asquatch! Music Festival just 2.5 hours east of Seattle. Ever since the bands had been announced, we knew we were going. No matter what. We left The Burque early Thursday morning and arrived in Seattle around noon. We stayed at Linley's best friend's, Edward, place until we left for Sasquatch.

Ed goes to Seattle University and used to live in the dorms. This is from the 12th story of his dorm building. He said that the building pictured is a crack house.

Seattle has QFC, a grocery store. While waiting for Ed's roommate to get off work, we waited on the balcony. Linley spotted a young Woody Allen (not pictured) too!

Seattle is a great city of public art displays.

Not to mention that they have a bitchin' public library with so many levels.

We went here too. Very touristy

Water is nice.

We went to the SAM. I saw this sculpture and loved it.

We left for Sasquatch Saturday morning and was in awe when we saw The Gorge. Unreal.

Your Cabin Got Too Much Party In It

About a week or so ago, I went turkey hunting with my dad and cousin in the Zuni Mountains near Bandera Volcano. I'm not a big hunter but I go because we use the feathers for religious purposes and I get to spend time with my dad. We got to our spot at around 6 a.m. and even though I sported some thermals under my camoes, I was still freezing. We hunted for a while and chilled out for lunch and so I went exploring and found an amazingly awesome abandoned cabin thing!!!!!!

As a disclaimer/warning thing, there are some graphic, gory images I took. So brace yourself if dead animals are not your thing.

We didn't get any turkeys so we shot birds because we needed the feathers. A robin, flicker and a blue bird (from back to front).

But my uncle got one!!!!!! He got it with a headshot. My dad and I helped him... dissect it? I dunno... take off the feathers and stuff.

This is called a TOM or a male turkey. The inside images are blurry because the lack of light reading on my light meter.

I held the turkey's body by the neck so my uncle could pull the rest of the turkey's feathers off.

This a lake that just sits here. It's dead. Bacteria is the only thing that lives in it.

I had a good time hanging out in the woods for a day. I'm sorry the post is kinda long, but I had four rolls of film developed at once so I have a lot of photos still.

The NOMS live at El Rey Theater

On Friday April 30, 2010, The NOMS played at The Burque's El Rey Theater to family, friends and FANSSSSSSSS!!!! The show was to celebrate the release of the their first ever EP, Choices, a collection of six pop-acoustic songs.

With neither a drum kit on the album or live, the songs are more intimate for your head-swaying listening ears. "We got offers from people who wanted to play drums for us but we said, 'No,'" said keyboardist Josh Herrera. "It wouldn't be us if we had a drum set because... it's our own sound," Herrera said. Choices is a great debut EP but you don't get the full range of the vocals and chemistry of the band unless you see and hear these guys live.

School is winding down to the last week of actual classes and I'm not at all motivated to start on a media law paper. I'll get to it soon but first, a Pentax post. Here are some from a day at Fiestas and some of the kids at work.

This past weekend The NOMS performed at UNM's Fiestas; which is a mini-music and arts festival held on campus. They only played four songs because of time/set restrictions but what they played was something special. Guitarist, Michelle Baumann and multi-instrumentalist, Jesse Herrera, stole the show with a slow burner duet mid set. Even though they didn't get to play half of what they wanted to, they enjoyed their time on stage and can't wait to play at the El Rey Theater this friday evening (4.30.10) in celebration of the release of their first ever EP, Choices!!!!! The show is for 21+ only (sad face) but if you youngsters are...young, you're allowed to come with a parent!!! To get tickets get in contact with The NOMS via their facebook and they'll meet you or something so you can purchase a ticket for $8. Bring your friends, girl/boy friend, siblings, parents and don't forget yourselves!

With his V.I.P Pass, Josh (far left) said, "I'm just gonna sit underneath the stage and listen to Flobots (headliner)."

Pentax Portraits

So I've had my Pentax K1000 for a little over a week now and when I first got it, I thought I would be shooting buildings and things that are not people. But what I have found out is that I like taking portraits with the Pentax, which is odd because I usually don't like to take photos of people. I used some friends and the kids at work as a starting point.

As young as she is, she already complains about boyfriend issues.

His hair used to be brown but he dyed it because he wanted to.

He was a paraplegic as a baby and now he can run.

Final POST postcard

In this final post of POST postcard I used one of William Hundley's photographs in which he puts things on top of cheeseburgers. I think the idea was not only hilarious but brilliant. Again, I gave this postcard along with other ones to some friends and instructed them to write/draw/do whatever they want to describe what the image suggests or ya.

That's all of those postcard things. I'm about done with another roll from the Pentax and what really surprised me is that I prefer taking portraits with the Pentax. So, expect portraits next time.

FIRSTIES with the Pentax K1000

So I ebay-ed for my first film camera and so far, I'm more than happy with my purchase. I bided on a Pentax K1000 and it's pretty. Looking through several sites and books and watching several youtube videos I finally loaded some Kodak Gold 200 speed film into my camera and set sail(?). These are the besties from the roll of film.

A Night With The NOMS

On Saturday evening at Corrales Brewery and Bistro, The NOMS, Albuquerque's newest pop-acoustic band took to the stage to play four sets of fresh new music from their upcoming debut album Choices and a handful of covers.

Filled with lyrics about friends, love and God, The NOMS filled Corrales Land with upbeat strumming and bongo beats. When the mood was set, The NOMS slowed it down but also incorporated gentle yet anthemic guitar solos from Greg Pisotti while Josh Herrera kept things at bay behind the keyboard. It seems that The NOMS were meant to be together. With every tune and melody fitting with their beautiful dual vocals and the expressions on each band member's face expressing joy and pride from the music that leaves the speakers and into our very own ears.

The NOMS are Mike Mares (vocals, acoustic guitar and bass), Michelle Baumann (vocals, acoustic guitar, shaker!), Greg Pisotti (electric guitar), Jesse Herrera (bongos/percussion, vocals, acoustic guitar, bass) and Josh Herrera (keyboard, bongos/percussion and backing vocals).

POST Postcard Part II

The next image I used was from Mary V. Robinson, a 16 year-old girl in an independent phtography study program thing. I liked her images because she shoots in film and she is good too. I'm watching The Killing Fields as I'm typing this and it's an intense movie (f.y.i.). It's about American and Cambodian journalists during Vietnam and mann-o-mann was it rough to be our there. So watch it if you want or ask me to borrow it!

POST Postcard Part I

The first installment in the POST postcard series. These are from the assignment, "Take, Borrow and Steal" where we use appropriation or use other images or things and take/manipulate the images. I decided to use images that I quickly reacted to while going through other blogs and self-motivated (being bored) photographer research. I addressed, postmarked and stamped the postcards and gave them to some friends. All I asked was for them to express their reactions to these images whether by drawing or writing. Pretty open ended but just send them back to me anonymously and by a certain date. The first postcard image is from renowned photojournalist, James Nachtwey.

"I'm not sure if he's praying or doing drugs..." "Why! Grandpa! No!" "I wish I had some [Drugs]."

So the assignment was called "Routine and Remains" and by doing so, I documented the remains of America's most famous highway-Route 66 (a.k.a Central Avenue). Six-de-Six used to be the most traveled highway in the U.S. and called the need for places to stay for travelers. So a long time ago, the motor hotel was introduced and although motels have now taken a back...back seat in the staying over night thing for many travelers, their remains still sit next to their favorite road-Route 66. I started on the west side of The Burque near 98th Street and worked my way all the way to the last MOTEL around Juan Tabo.

So I just finished a couple of projects this week and they went quite well. One was with postcards where I used other photographer's images and gave 'em to friends to write or draw their reactions to the images. It was a success and they are being graded now so I'll have installments of those postcards up sometime soon. Today, I also started and ended a repetition project about the motels that are on The Burque's famous Central Avenue (a.k.a Route 66). Those will be up probably during the weekend. Hola! Hola! Hola! Hola! I went to Zuni this past weekend to take care of me and after that was done with, I had 25 exposures left on my less than a day old cheap disposable camera. So, I went next door to my grandma's where they have lots-a-things outside and so I tried to be creative with what I could find. I find that doing what I do with what I find and photographing it, is very therapeutic for me. If I don't want to talk to someone, doing this will help. So here ya go.

Gathering, assembling and shooting this outdoor living area was quite a blast for me. Usually I want someone with me but it was a great time to null things around inside my head and so I'm glad this was just me out there. Occasionally someone would walk or run by and give me the "what the fuck are you doing with all this shit" look or the "are you gonna clean it up?" or even the "are you really dumping your trash here?" look WITHOUT even looking at me. I could just feel it. ya know? yea, Iknow.

So here's the answers to those question looks: This is for an "art" project that deals with the words: take, borrow and steal so I'm borrowing this junk. This isn't my trash because I found all of it within a 100-meter radius of this place. And sorry but I left it the way I set up. I didn't redistribute the junk. Hopefully if I go back there, someone will add something else to it??????

Finally finished another disposable! At the end of February...I...nevermind. School is out for spring break and I was able to finish my FINAL paper for my 8-week class in Mass Communication Ethics in two days and if I might say, I think it should be a pretty good paper (I hope).

I was a little angered when I found out that my memory card for the fancy Cannon Rebel camera was broken so I had to get another one:( Today, I went to the west side of the burque to gather some junk and make something for my photography class. Instead of gathering stuff and taking it to my house, I decided to build it on site and it was a great idea. I'm not going to say what I made just yet, but photos of it will be up later. Until then, here are some other photos.

The Flea Market: A Narrative Project

The 25-acre lot located on the Expo New Mexico State Fair Grounds, is home to the state’s largest outdoor flea market. It can hold 1,300 vendors every Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to around 6 p.m.

Rain or shine, this eclectic outdoor mall attracts hundreds of vendors and shoppers from all parts of New Mexico.

Vendors pay $20 per day for a space to sell whatever they want: food, furniture, clothes, jewelry or cell phone chargers and T.V. remotes.

There are several candy stands available at the flea market, but these children take a stop at this particular stand to have a look at the wide variety of candy for sale.

Salesmen arrange shoes for potential buyers.

Anything and everything is for sale.

This fruit drink stand quenches shopper’s thirst to keep them hydrated while they continue with their shopping.

Even mannequin heads are covered on this nippy day.

Portraits of rappers, wrestlers and celebrities are hung and printed on T-shirts while others are propped against table legs.

Here, Hello Kitty and Cinderella rank higher than Jesus Christ.

The flea market is a cheaper alternative than the Hollister and Abercrombie and Fitch infested malls.

Whether you want to buy or sell, the flea market has something for everyone that reflects New Mexico’s unique culture.

"Your Hands (Together)"

The Burque's flea market is the state's largest outdoor flea market and can attract up to 1,300 vendors on any weekend from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. I took a couple of trips to take pictures there and while I did get some weird looks when taking pictures, the experience and their faces were worth the nippy windy days.

They even had the Pedi-Foot callus grader thing here too! For $6!

She slapped that baby (her brother?) for some unknown reason, hence the crying.

Funnel cakes are good too.

Money for sale.

B-Side Narrative

This is what some might call a "b-side", the other side to something bigger. In my case it is a narrative I took from my first blog to be part of a photography project. At first I didn't want to show these photographs because people, nowadays, don't take dead animals in a light manner. But now that that's so last semester I figured it's time I put 'em up here. Originally I didn't really have anything written to talk about the images, I just gave background information for each picture while presenting my photographs which wove it's way into a narrative about butchering a calf. So this is my first shot at putting actual captions or texts to these photos. These were shot in October 2009 in the Pueblo of Zuni.

After an exhausting day at the Long-Horn house, the Othole family was awaiting the arrival of a calf from Dulce, N.M. At least once a month, the Othole family butchers a sheep either for a ceremonial festivity or just to have a good meal, but a calf isn't butchered as often. After I finished washing the cement mixer, wheelbarrow and tools, my dad and I rushed over to my uncle Casa's house. By the time we arrived, we were told that the calf was about 5-feet 5-inches tall and took two shotgun-shells to the head before it died and fell over. My uncles and cousins sawed the head off and used several knives to skin the calf while my female cousins and aunties held the ropes the outstretched the calf's legs.

After skinning, both men and women help in taking out the calf's organs and intestines. While they are doing this, the family dogs are circling the carcass and whoever is not butchering is shooing off the dogs.

Every part of the cow will be put to use. The Zuni people don't waste anything. What's edible will be cooked and what's not, will be made into "other" things. Usually butchering goes like this- the men decapitate, skin and clear the inside of the animal; the women, clean the intestines, cut and cook the meat.

Here, my auntie is squeezing out what's left of the insides of the large intestine into a bucket. When they have cleared the stomach, they fill it with blood and other calf parts and bake it in the horno (outdoor oven). This task is always a smelly one.

After the men had dissected the calf's limbs and torso, they walked briskly with the heavy pieces of calf towards Casa's storage and hung them on the rafters. In the background of the image is a wood stump. It was used to prop the head of the dead calf so that the men could cut it's head off. Here, my uncle Bert relaxes and watches the women clean out the intestines.

As the months drew nearer to the big day in December, more calfs and sheep were graciously donated and butchered to fit the needs of feeding those who participated and helped with the winter solstice. Many may be disturbed about these images but this is just a look of the other side that most people don't take in before they eat that hamburger or steak. I don't find this sick, I find it a way of life. It's what the Zunis have been doing since our existence. This is who I am, Zuni.

In the Summer, I go from "latte to espresso".

School is back in session and so far, I'm ready for summer. I've gone to a couple basketball games with some friends and have had a blast cheering on my school. One of the things I love about school is my walk up to campus. Here are some more cheap disposable photos!!!!!

Here is a part of my family's past and present.

M.L.K. Jr., Day weekend, me and the parentals went to the Phoenix area (because it's all Phoenix anyways) not only to run our half marathons but also to spend time with my aunties. I did ok, not my best.Running has always been a factor in my household and now it has carried on to my aunties and their families. Here are images from the fancy camera!

We were trying to look for my auntie's place but my mum got us loss in Scottsdale.

My dad's dad on the left died way before I was born and this image is the only image I know. My dad's mom died when I was about 5 years old and even then I really didn't know her. People say she made the best burritos. My dad says everytime he sees his sister, Jean, he always sees his mom. She looks and acts just like her. My great grandmother died a little after her daughter and everytime tamales are on the stove, I think of my great grandmother. My Grandfather smoked Malborros all his life and died of natural causes at age 94. I don't remeber meeting my uncle. They called him "Reefer".

My dad with his brothers in his party days. Glad those are over. And yes he knew Joey Romone's younger, shorter brother.

"What? Did I go to this?" my dad asks. "Oh yea, I was already passed out by the time it started."

At 7 a.m., the secretary did doughnuts in response to me parking in "her" parking space.

Today is officially the last day of winter break (sad face?). I'm partial about it ending because it seemed really long and I'm ready to start new classes and get done with school. I was in Phoenix, AZ. this past weekend running a half marathon. I didn't do as well as I hoped but for some weird reason I felt stronger. Miles 1-7 went great then...yea.

Good news. I am no longer a virgin...to IN-N-OUT BURGER!!!! After a stop at U.O. and the music store we good our grub on and masticated. VIVA IN-N-OUT BURGER EN ALBUQUERQUE!!!!

Here is phase two of the cheap 35mm disposable try out. I concentrated at my work site. I pretty much get paid to hang out with kids before and after school. I like using a disposable a lot because it trains the eye to be more cautious of what I take. The above picture was taken at UNM.

This was a cold day that I hoped we would cancel recess.

For the longest time we've been wanting to get together and get a few rounds of airsoft in, but once the sun goes done, it's cold and most of the friends aren't that motivated to play. After a few requests, someone got things together and set a date and time.

I was really excited to take pictures of the backyard and the game but when i took out my camera I remembered that I left the battery at home (NOOOOOOOOOOOO!). No worries, It was a good time to practice with cheap 35mm disposable cameras!

Who said Slip n' Slide was a summer activity? I had an idea and here is our attempt at bringing that idea to a reality.

Not a complete loss, but we will definitely make a better plan the next time we do this.

I finished documenting a house being built so I'll start documenting things around me. It's good to be on break. With a temporary running partner it's feels great to be out running on a regular basis but the cold makes it hard for us at times.

At the beginning of December I ran a race in Kentucky and did horrible, but I did find an old electric box near our room while staying at the University of Kentucky.

It may not be old but it looks old.

The box looks like it's gathered up some mileage.

Every year we get a Christmas tree, I'm the only one in the family who decorates it. I was really excited last year when we didn't get one, so I put Christmas lights around our standing lamp.

Monopoly can make and brake family get-togethers.

I was very proud of this photo I took for an image and text project earlier this year. Thanks to my best friend Doug who was sick and still came across town for the shoot.

Finally, I'm really excited that The New Pornographers are coming out with a new album in 2010. I've been on a New Pornographers binge for quite sometime now but here is a live video (sans five members including singers Dan Bejar and Neko Case) of my current fav song, "Mass Romantic" from their 2000 debut. Enjoy.
